Tips to Help Your Child Sit an Exam Effectively

Exams are one of the most important aspects of your student’s educational path, however, they are also one of the most disliked aspects. What is often the case, however, is that students aren’t concerned about the content as much as they are about the process, causing them to make small mistakes with big implications. To help your student prepare for and sit an upcoming exam, The Tutoring Center, Oro Valley has the following post to offer.
  • Cramming in a few hours of study the night before an exam is not an effective way to study and certainly doesn’t lead to high grades. Whether it’s simply reading notes on the bus home a few days a week to spending an hour or two each night studying, be sure to study for the exam ahead.
  • Pens, pencils, markers, highlighters, measuring or drawing tools, whatever it is that you expect to need to complete your exam, be sure to pack it into a small case. Then, as you walk out the door the next morning, be sure to double check its contents just to make sure you have everything you need.
  • When you sit down to take your exam and are allowed to start, the first thing you should do is write your name and any other identifying information that is required. While it might seem a strange tip to include, too many students miss out on receiving the mark they worked hard for simply because they didn’t write their name on the exam.
  • Once you are sure the assessor will know who you are, it’s time to take a look through the questions in the exam and identify any questions or sections which you are confident you can answer correctly and quickly. Once you have considered these, make your way through the questions which you expect to present more of a challenge.
  • As much as you can feel certain that you wrote all of the answers correctly and legibly, you can never be 100 percent sure until you check. This is exactly what you should do. Be sure to leave time at the end of the exam to look through your answers and make sure that everything is correct and can be read easily.
