How to Keep Your Child's Brain Active, Learning, and Warm!

When the sun is shining it can seem like an impossible challenge to keep your children still for long enough to feed them! When the sun goes away, however, that’s a different story filled with children who have been struck with rare cases of being glued to the couch! If your couch could use a break, below are some fun and educational activities ideas from The Tutoring Center, Oro Valley which don’t involve too much outdoor time!

Paint-By-Numbers

If your youngster has shown an interest in art, whether it be through looking at picture books or exploring the textures of your lipstick by painting your wall, then adding a learning element to a paint-by-numbers set is a great idea. Start by letting your youngster choose the set they would like to paint the most, with the idea that it isn’t too intricate for them to complete but also has a good range of numbers to use. Once you are all set up, start by painting the answers to math based questions. For example:
  • Painting all of the prime numbers first is a good place to start.
  • Then, move on to multiplication tables, focusing on any sets they have been struggling with.
  • Once these are done, use the remaining numbers to make your own equations for them to complete.
Not only is this a good way to keep their math mind sharp but it is also a good opportunity to identify any new learning challenges.

Visit a Museum

There is only a short amount of cold weather with this one, and it’s the time to and from your car. However, it will be worth it. While it’s fair to say that in the past museums were limited in the level of exhibits they were able to provide, an embrace of technology has allowed many of these museums to provide interactive and fun installations focused on not only entertaining children (and giving their parents time for a coffee) but also teaching them. Your local tourism department is a good place to start as they are likely to have a list of everything being offered in your city.

These are just two ways that you and your youngster can enjoy time together in the warmth while also keeping their brain sharp.
