Tutoring Help for Basic Comprehension of  Nouns and Pronouns

Learning the parts of speech is lays the foundation for later, more complicated grammar lessons. However, not all students are able to completely understand all parts of speech at the same pace. It's also important to keep in mind that without practice, they can easily be forgotten. Since it is important to review the basic grammar concepts often, at The Tutoring Center in Oro Valley, we want to quickly go over nouns and pronouns.

Nouns and Pronouns

  • Nouns. Although most students know that a noun names a person, place, or thing, they also need to be aware that there are different types of nouns. Proper nouns state the actual name of the person, place, or thing and are therefore always capitalized (ex. Ana, The Pizza Place). Common nouns are more general, such as girl, restaurant, house, etc. There are also concrete and abstract nouns, as well as count and non-count nouns, among others.
  • Pronouns. Pronouns replace nouns when it is hard to specify the actual noun. Examples: I, me, my, he, she, that, this, his, hers, it, they, us, you. Just like there are different types of nouns, there are also a variety of pronoun categories.
